"What Can We Learn From the Latest Corporate Scandals?"

Watch Your Back!
Looking out for your own personal well being is a must today with all of the lay offs, bankruptcies and scandals.  What that means is, don't put all of your faith in a job.  Many of the people who worked for Enron Corp. for several years thought they're job was pretty secure.  That is, until it was revealed that there were problems with their accounting practices.  WorldCom, the nation's second-largest long-distance telephone carrier, admitted it had grossly overstated profits in one of the largest accounting scandals ever.  Recently, it was announced that the SEC is investigating AOL Time Warner.  So what is a sister to do?
The first thing you can do is to never stop learning, be versatile.  Take advantage of your pay check by going back to school to get an advanced degree or take career enhancing classes like some computer classes or earn a certification or license.  Anything you can do to make yourself more marketable in whatever industry you are in will be well worth it.  It is so important to always keep your skills current.
Secondly, don't put all of your eggs in one basket.  Learn from the former Enron employees who lost all of their money because they invested it ALL in the company's 401K plans, stock options, etc.  It's okay to participate in some of your company's investment options, but also put some of your money elsewhere outside of the company at which you work.  There are several different options such as CD's money market accounts, mutual funds, bonds, and more.
Lastly, always make sure you have some type of back up plan.  Start by asking yourself this question: "If I were to get fired today, how would I pay my rent or the mortgage or my car note?" And make out a plan.

Next time we will give you more information on how to build a diversified portfolio to help make your money work for you!
