Fad Diets and Your Health"

Have you ever heard of the Atkins Diet, Carbohydrate Addict's Diet, Cabbage Soup Diet, or the Sugar Buster's Diet?  All of these are fad diets that one of us has tried at some time or another.  All fad diets can be very dangerous.  for instance, the with the Atkins diet, there are doctors who warn that prolonged use of this diet will can cause you to have painful kidney stones.  And all of them can lead to malnutrition if you stay on them for a long while because they usually overemphasize one food or food type.  No one food has all of the nutritional value that you need for good health.  

Liquid diets, where you only consume liquids and no solid foods can be very dangerous--even deadly.  Most people don't even check with their doctors before going on a strenuous diet and exercise plan which is a definite no-no.

The only key to permanent healthy weight loss is to lose no more than 1-2 lbs. a week and exercise.  The secret is to make a lifestyle change--resolve to start making healthier choices as a way of living.

Here are helpful tips:

  • Load up on the veggies instead of  the meats and desserts
  • Eat a small healthy meal before going out so you won't eat as much
  • If you're cooking dinner, substitute more healthful choices in recipes (i.e. egg whites instead of whole eggs)
  • Whether or not you fill up on food, take a brisk walk after dinner with a friend or family member to burn some calories 
  • Fiber -get lots of it! It helps you to feel full longer and good for your digestive system!
